Hisia Safaris, el viaje de las emociones

Shopping in Kenya

On a trip, what really matters are the feelings, the emotions experienced, which can not be explained with words, which is not even reflected in the photos, what remains in our eyes, our minds and hearts for the rest of our days.

But we also have the hobby (and we are included) of want to take a piece of our trips home. And in Kenya there are lots of pieces.

We can find a lot of woodwork. Animals carved in ebony (attention, not every wood is ebony), bows and arrows (representative and not to use them! Hehe), Maasai blankets, masks, bracelets, pottery, T-shirts, typical Masai objects, coasters, wall hangings, figures made with banana leaves... Everything you can imagine...

The way to buy in Kenya is something characteristic, you'll have to use the haggling, as we have told in one of our previous posts. There is nothing that has a fixed price. Choose whatever you like and then negotiates a price! Don't underestimate the power of a smile, always you get more if you have a positive attitude that if you get angry to hear a high price.

You can buy in the little shops of the accommodation, in local markets, Masai markets when visiting the manyattas, at the entrance to the parks, gas stations where there are also Masais selling... Any place is good to haggle a bit!

We show you some pictures of some things that you can find there. We explain what each thing is from left to right and top to bottom!

Compras Kenya

Maasai shield, stick to make fire, ebony carving, wood carving bench and painted with natural dyes, Maasai safari hat and a tapestry.

Compras Kenya

Souvenir shirts, rhino carved in wood, carved ceramic dish with the map of Africa and savannah animals, zebra mask, wooden coasters, Masai bracelets, object that every Maasai home has to keep the mixture of blood and milk they consume on a daily basis. This one of course is much more ornate than those used by them.

Compras Kenya

Wooden mask, zebras tapestry made with banana leaves and a tapestry where some Maasai manyattas are appreciated. Giraffe and elephant figures made of banana leaves and map of Africa woodcarving with the Big Five within.

Everything explained above, with the Maasai blanket used as curtain!

To haggle, arm yourself with patience, keep in mind the "pole pole" and if you do not reach an agreement, hakuna matata, next time!
